Feline Feature

The Feline Feature returns! Sorry for the hiatus, I've been a little busy/stressed/overwhelmed/depressed and didn't really feel like taking care of my blog, so I just didn't bother to keep up with the Feline Feature. But it's back this week!

When my friends and I were downtown recently, we walked by this sewing store on Main Street and found these cats both sleeping in the most awkward, uncomfortable-looking positions. But they were both dead to the world and barely even noticed that we were hovering outside taking pictures. There were just so adorable sleeping like that! The one actually had it's face pressed up against the glass as if it was a pillow. I don't know why, but cats always seem to find the oddest, most uncomfortable positions and sleep as if they were on a feather bed. :)

Wow, it seems like this past week has just flown by. I can't believe it's that time again; for the Feline Feature!

This week's choice is an old one of George, taken at my house during college. I just love the expression on his face; it's so classic George!

I know I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again, but I love Mouse's big green eyes. She's so adorable :) I really like this shot because of the way her face is barely in the frame with her green eyes being the first thing you see. And they're so intent, so piercing in the way she's staring that it's hard to look away. This photo also captures her curiosity perfectly, the way she's peering around to look at that strange silver thing with the dangly string that I'm holding in front of her face. She's in the process of moving to swipe at it when I caught her.

This particular photo isn't that great, compositionally and technically speaking, but I love it anyways, because of the close placement of George's head and the side of the window frame. The photo could appropriately be titled "Cats Sleep In the Darnedest Places". Now that doesn't look terribly comfortable to me, but when George sleeps, he sleeps hard. Maybe he doesn't even notice. Who knows. Cats are odd.

I just got my income taxes done! Hooray, that's something I don't have to worry about any more! And now I'm laying here on my bed with a sleepy kitty snuggled up on my lap. What a good day. :)

Here is Mouse stretched out in my windowsill, relaxing in the sun. I love her eyes, they're such a deep green and have an ancient feel to them. When I look at her I remember that cats were once worshipped, and half believe that Mouse knows it too.

Feline Feature -- Two Days Late

My Feline Feature for this week is two days late, and it's only the second one of the series! Wow, that's just sad. I've really got to do better. The single pathetic excuse I can offer is that I've been really busy this past week. J got off without a hitch, she's all settled in at her internship and completely loving it. I miss having her here, but I'm glad she's happy and I'm really glad that she is able to be out doing something that she loves and feels so strongly about. I haven't been able to find that yet, much less get to do it.

Anyways, like I said, I've been busy working, as well as re-organizing and cleaning my apartment since it's a lot emptier without all of J's stuff. And believe me, it needed a good cleaning! I'm not exactly the best housekeeper. Okay, I'll be honest, I hate cleaning and therefore do it as rarely as possible. Hence the need for a thorough cleaning while I had the chance.

This is Malaika, my roommate's (and now my) cat. She's really adorable when she's not racing around the apartment destroying things. I managed to catch her here while she was napping, which by the size of her eyes you would never be able to tell. She just has these huge brown eyes and does quite a bit of staring. I also like the contrast of the blue blanket behind her, it really makes her face, and especially those big brown eyes, pop so that they're the first thing you see.

As it's raining and miserable outside and I'm therefore bored (I canceled my cable service as my roommate J is moving out this weekend and I will no longer be able to afford such luxuries), I've been killing time by going through old pictures on my little Canon point-and-shoot digital camera. I freely admit it, there is an overwhelming majority of cat pictures. Apparently my cats are all I ever take pictures of (I can't help it, they're just so cute!). Anyways, as there are so many that more than a few aren't half bad, I've decided to institute a new feature of this blog: The Feline Feature! Every week I will choose one of the better shots of one of the cats to feature. Since today is Thursday, I am arbitrarily choosing Thursdays to implement this new wonderful profile. Now, you attentive readers might remember that only two of the three cats currently residing in my apartment are mine, so that would imply that one will soon be leaving with J. Well, for the next nine months I have temporary ownership of the third, and craziest, cat. My roommate is taking a (miraculously) paid internship at some sort of bird research foundation, studying and tracking wild cranes. They are providing housing at the research place and no pets are allowed (probably afraid they will eat the cranes), so Malaika is staying with me, Mouse, and George for the foreseeable future. Lucky me. I swear, that cat is systematically destroying this apartment.


And now, for the first time ever on this blog, the Feline Feature Photo!

(I realize that for continuity's sake I should probably spell "Photo" with an "F" but I hate it when people do that, it really irritates me and I refuse to ever be that cutesy)

The subject here is my Georgie. This picture is one of my particular favorites, hence the choice of putting it up first. I like to think of this as a portrait, because it really shows George's personality (and don't even try to argue that cats can't have personalities, because I will never believe you). I used the black-and-white option, which is one of the things I like so much about the little mainstream point-and-shoot digital cameras, they make features like that easy! But one of the reasons I like this shot so much is that even though it's in black and white, you can still almooooost see the color of George's eyes and face.
